Significance of Ramadan
Ramadan, one of the five “pillars of Islam” is a time for spiritual development and fasting. The others include the Mecca pilgrimage, daily prayer, almsgiving, and the profession of faith. Muslims who are physically capable are supposed to refrain from eating, drinking, and having intercourse from sunrise to sunset every day of the month.
Many devout Muslims also try to recite the entire Qur’an and offer extra prayers, particularly at night. Muslims generally believe that the Prophet Muhammad received the Qur’an for the first time during the last ten nights of Ramada.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ: شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ
Meaning: “Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.” [Sahih-al-Bukhari: 8, Sahih Muslim: 16]
One Special Night (Laylatul Qadr) in Ramadan
Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Decree or Night of Power, is the most sacred night in Ramadan. It is believed to be the night when the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Allah says in the Quran:
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍۢ
Meaning: “The Night of Qadr (destiny, power) is better than a thousand months.” [Sura al-Qadr: 3]
It falls in the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th). The 27th night is widely considered the most probable.
Significance of Laylatul Qadr
- The Qur’an describes it as a night of peace and blessings until dawn.
- Angels, including Jibreel (AS), descend to the earth.
- Forgiveness of sins for those who sincerely seek Allah’s mercy.
What do Muslims do during Ramadan?
According to the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a holy month during which fasting is required. Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, doing bad things, becoming angry, and using derogatory words. They also fast from sunrise to sunset.
During the month of Ramadan, the entire body fasts. Fasting has the advantage of preventing people from hurting themselves by preventing them from seeing and hearing evil deeds, as well as from hurting other people with their hands and mouths.
Perform Umrah in Ramadan
Ramadan is a month of generosity and compassion, where giving charity holds immense rewards. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the most generous during this blessed month.
Allah says in the Quran:
يٰٓا أَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ آمَنُوْا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ
Meaning: “Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa (piety and mindfulness of Allah)” [Surah-al-Baqarah:183]
- Zakat – The obligatory 2.5% of savings given to the needy.
- Sadaqah – Voluntary charity, including feeding the poor and helping others.
- Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr) – A small charity given before Eid to purify the fast.
